本年度の活動内容

United Nations Understanding (Peace and human rights, environment, sustainable development, climate change, etc.)

KGN sponsored and organized the 28^thannual Kansai High School Model United Nations,June 18^th– 20^th, at the Kyoto International Conference Center.

·     Agenda: The impact of Climate Change on Children

·     Over 300 high school students from 11 Japanese high schools.

·     English event.

·     KGN students served as student leaders, participating as pages, delegates, bloc leaders, secretaries and assembly presidents.

·     KGN students spent 12 weeks preparing for the KHSMUN. English preparations included: United Nations research, country research, agenda research, presentations and debate.

International Exchange

KGN students and teachers participated in numerous international exchange opportunities both abroad and in Japan.

·     Australia, Canada, Guam, Korea, Malaysia and New Zealand

UNESCO Club
KGN’s UNESCO club continued to be active in both on and off-campus activities centered on ESD and SDGs.

·     Student members organized activities for the annual KGN Culture Festival to become officially designated an ‘Eco-Event’ by Kyoto City.  Working with KGN’s student council, UNESCO Club students organized the use of re-use plates and cups during the festival with a goal of reducing waste.

·     Student members participated in the annual Gomi-Zero project during Kyoto’s annual Gion Festival, encouraging the use of re-use cups and dishes with the festival’s food vendors, separating trash and staffing eco-booths that promoted the concept of an ‘Eco-Event’.

·     Student members participated in the 3^ndannual ASPnet Kyoto Student Workshop at Kamigamo Shrine, a one-day event for students for the 7 Kyoto UNESCO high schools.  Students participated in field work, active-learning workshop and presentations on the theme: Shinto and Nature.

·     Student members began a Kyoto UNESCO World Heritage Site guide book for visiting international students at KGN.  Completed phase 1 – research trip to Arashiyama.

·     Student members volunteered at TEDxKyoto 2018

Traditional Culture and Understanding

KGN students participated in both curricular and after-school activities designed to foster an appreciation for Japanese culture and cultural understanding.

·     Students in the Course of International and Cultural Studies studied Japanese Tea Ceremony with Omotosenke twice a month.

·     Students in the Course of International and Cultural Studies participated in a Zazenand Buddhism workshop at Daitokuji Temple, Kyoto.

·     Students and teachers organized tours of various cultural sites around Kyoto for visiting international visitors.

·     Students in the Course of International and Cultural Studies visited the National Museum of Ethnology in Osaka to research different cultures for class presentations.

·     Students listened to JICA Volunteer presentations on the topic of Cultural Awareness and Sustainable Development in Kenya, Mozambique, Niger and Sri Lanka.

UNESCO ASPnet Kyoto (Community involvement and ESD activities)

·     KGN teachers organized, hosted and participated in regular meetings of the ASPnet Kyoto UNESCO High School organization, a group of teachers from 7 UNESCO High Schools in Kyoto, to share resources and ideas on ESD, and to organized the 3^nd Annual ASPnet Kyoto UNESCO High School workshop at Kamigamo Shrine. 

·     KGN teachers helped to organized the 2^nd annual UNESCO ESD Conference hosted by Kyoto University of Foreign Studies.

来年度の活動計画

1.  KGN will continue to  produce and teach teaching materials focused on SDGs as students participate in international exchange and Model United Nations activities.

2.  Students will continue to learn about Japanese culture in order to share their culture with others in English.

3.  KGN will continue to cooperate with the Kyoto UNESCO Association and through UNESCO club, join community events that support SDGs and ESD.

4.  KGN will continue to cooperate in hosting and organizing regular meetings and events for the 7 ASPnet UNESCO High Schools in Kyoto.

5.  KGN will organize and host the 29th annual Kansai High School Model United Nationswith the agenda: Reducing poverty through sustainable development goals

• Plan and organize the event
• Train student leaders
• Organize a teacher training workshop for all 11 high schools

6.  KGN will implement a new 8-week international exchange program for 2nd year students in the Course of International & Cultural Exchange. Students will attend schools and stay with host families in Vancouver, Canada from September, 2019.

• • Teachers will prepare and teach lessons in English on Canada’s history, culture, immigrant society, social issues and daily life
  • Students will prepare Japanese culture presentations to present to students in Canada.
