We consider ESD to be an opportunity to think about the mature society that Japan of the 21st century should aim for with the goal of “the realization of the sustainable society” in our school.
We aim to nurture “the willingness to pay more attention to the problems each person has in our society” and act for towards the realization of a sustainable society, especially through the practice of ESD.

Putting emphasis on the following three points, that is,
“the way society should be”, “the way nature should be” and “how ourselves should be”,
we have learning activities such as
debate, field work, and workshop activities.

1 Junior High School Students ( 7th to 9th Graders)
Mainly, we have classes such as “debates in the Japanese language”, “English debates”, “social studies”, and “science” . Each class has some debate activities so that the students can think about the problems and issues from many viewpoints. This leads to the students’ positive action towards discovering the issues and solving them.

2 10th Graders
The students choose their favorite books and read them. Then, they tell their classmates what they thought about the books (exchanging and sharing their opinions) and at the same time, they develop their discussion, developing their thoughts.
Also, we often invite some lecturers from universities and the NGO, having a workshop about SDGs and think about problems of the “global” modern society from a local viewpoint.

3 11th and 12th Graders
Having classes on SDGs and sustainability, the 11th graders have the chance to visit universities, companies, institutions, etc. in order to answer the questions they have and deepen their thoughts. Then, they make presentations on their topics.
Some students go to Australia in order to improve their English and learn about cultural diversities, a good opportunity to think about “the way society should be” through the interchange with the students of a local school.

The 12th graders write reports and short essays about issues of the modern society to broaden their thoughts.

4 Activities by the Research Project Team
Besides the activities above, we have the Research Project Team, which is for students who wish to promote their favorite social or science activities.

This year, under the theme of “Japanese culture”, including animation and the martial arts, students have started an online exchange with Ukrainian high school students.

Annual Work Plan

For the upcoming 2026 academic year, we plan to continue the familiar activities that have been central to our students’ experiences. Through ESD and SDGs initiatives rooted in our local communities of Moriyama and Shiga, we aim to cultivate students’ ability to “approach societal challenges from multiple perspectives, take concrete action, deepen their thinking through that action, and reflect that learning into subsequent actions.”

We have consistently pursued collaboration with various external individuals and organizations in advancing our school’s activities. Moving forward, we will continue to prioritize partnerships with like-minded schools, including UNESCO Associated Schools both domestically and internationally, wherever possible. Our goal remains to enhance the practical skills of our students in ESD and SDGs implementation.
