Our school aims to cultivate the qualities and abilities necessary to identify challenges independently, learn proactively, think critically, make sound judgments, and solve problems more effectively, all with the goal of realizing a sustainable society. We have systematized this learning as “Shiretoko Studies.” Since the 2019 academic year, we have continued to advance these efforts in conjunction with the “Marine Education Pioneer School Program,” for which we received designation from the Hokkaido Board of Education.
This year, we systematically implemented activities focused on the three key areas emphasized by UNESCO Schools: “Bear Studies and Ecosystem Learning,” “Comparative Studies of Rausu Town and Other Regions,” and “Rausu Town PR Activities.”
① Global Citizenship and a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence
Through “Comparative Learning between Rausu Town and Other Regions,” students deepened their understanding of how differences in natural environments impact people’s lives and cultures by studying the history of Ainu culture and the unique characteristics of local wildlife. This fostered an attitude of respect for other regions’ cultures. Additionally, through cruising experiences, students gained experiential learning about the natural appeal of the Rausu-Shiretoko region and deepened their understanding of the connection between the sea and the mountains.
② Sustainable Development and Sustainable Lifestyles
The “Bear Studies and Ecosystem Studies” program systematically organized learning content for grades 1 through 3. Through experiential learning provided by the Shiretoko Foundation, it created opportunities for students to actively consider coexistence with bears.
③ Cross-Cultural Learning and Respect for Cultural Diversity and Heritage
The “Rausu Town PR Activities” involved producing promotional videos, sharing content via social media, and distributing local specialty products. This initiative widely communicated the value of Shiretoko, a World Natural Heritage site, while fostering local pride through conducting surveys.
These achievements were presented at the UNESCO School Research Presentation Meeting held in December and shared with all schools within the town.
Annual Work Plan
In fiscal year 2026, we will continue to advance educational activities based on the systematic initiatives of the Rausu Town Integrated Elementary, Junior High, and High School Education Promotion Council. Among the four pillars of learning, the following will be prioritized: * “Learning to Know”: Inquiry-based learning about the flora and fauna of the Shiretoko region. * “Learning to Live as a Human Being”: Bear education and ecosystem studies. * “Learning to Live Together”: Rausu Town PR activities to convey the appeal of the World Heritage site. The outcomes of these initiatives will be presented at the 15th Rausu Town UNESCO School Research Presentation Meeting.
