UNESCO School Activity Report for FY 2025
As an integrated course, our school offers educational activities across seven series and promotes learning in cooperation with the local community. In addition, as a designated SDGs research school, we have actively linked our learning activities to the SDGs. In school events and other activities, students were encouraged to be aware of which SDGs goals their efforts were connected to. (Photo links included in bold.)
- In the Humanities and Community Studies Series, students participated in classes that involved visiting historical sites related to the Battle of Okinawa in order to learn about peace. Starting with why the Kadena Air Base, which is adjacent to our school, was established, students considered how we can maintain peace and what actions are necessary to ensure that war never happens again.
- In the Business and Industrial Series, students listened to requests from local elementary schools and created bulletin boards tailored to their needs, which were then presented to the schools. In the agriculture program, students cultivated sweet potatoes and provided kindergarten children with a sweet potato digging experience.
- In the Welfare Series, students learned about welfare from the perspectives of people with disabilities and elderly individuals, considering what support is needed and what actions they themselves can take.
- The SDGs Fukushima Training Program has been conducted for the past three years. This year, ten students (five first-year and five second-year students) participated. They learned about disaster prevention and reconstruction efforts in Fukushima Prefecture, which has experienced three major disasters: a tsunami, an earthquake, and a nuclear power plant accident. Students also engaged in exchanges with Futaba Mirai Gakuen High School. To give back to the local community, a joint evacuation drill was conducted on November 5 (World Tsunami Awareness Day) with residents of an elderly care facility in Kadena Town. Participants exchanged opinions on issues such as evacuation time and evacuation routes to ensure the safe evacuation of elderly residents. Students were also given the opportunity to present at the Shinshu SDGs Awards, making this a highly meaningful training experience. (Overview)
- To promote international understanding, our school actively engages in exchanges with Kadena High School located on Kadena Air Base. These exchanges include participation in each other’s classes and interactions through club activities, providing opportunities to consider coexistence with the base. In addition, this year, twelve students participated in a study program in Korea organized by the Japan–Korea Cultural Exchange Foundation. We are also scheduled to host Korean students in February. Through interaction with people from other countries, students deepen their understanding of different cultures and develop a broader global perspective.
- Our school actively promotes community collaboration. Activities include participation in town beautification efforts (the Kadena Town Color Project), volunteering at local sports festivals and community events, hosting summer independent research workshops for elementary school students (with our students serving as instructors), and offering outreach classes at elementary schools. We hope these activities contribute to students’ career education. Each year, the number of students wishing to participate has increased, and the spirit of “challenge” has become a shared motto throughout the school.
Annual Work Plan
Activity Plan for FY 2026
Across the seven series (Humanities, Arts, Business, Sports, Childcare, Welfare, and Natural Sciences), we plan to continue initiatives that emphasize the SDGs while strengthening collaboration with the local community.
The SDGs Fukushima training trip will also be conducted next year (August). Students who participated this year will propose ideas from a high school student’s perspective on the reconstruction of Futaba Town and explore ways to collaborate with local government on disaster prevention efforts in Kadena Town. We also plan to continue initiatives that contribute to the local community in the coming year.
Furthermore, if our school is officially recognized as a UNESCO School, it will be the only prefectural high school in Okinawa to receive this designation. We aim to actively promote our activities throughout the prefecture.
