2025 Annual Report
Biodiversity, Cultural diversity, International understanding, Poverty, Global Citizenship Education (GCED)
In April 2025, Nara Prefectural Kokusai Junior & Senior High School was officially approved as a UNESCO School.
Based on our school mission to “foster the qualities and abilities to perceive matters from a global perspective and contribute to the peace and development of the international community through active communication with diverse people,” our high school offers “Global Inquiry” and “World Languages,” while the junior high school provides “Foundations of Global Inquiry” as core subjects.
In “Global Inquiry” and “Foundations of Global Inquiry,” students are divided into three seminars grounded in ESD principles. Through these seminars, students actively engage with social issues and participate in diverse inquiry activities. Both junior and senior high schools hold Vertically Connected Inquiry Exchange Meetings, promoting learning and dialogue across grade levels. In “World Languages,” students study not only languages but also the cultures and histories behind them. They had the opportunity to learn about Māori language, culture, and language revitalization efforts through exchange with guests from New Zealand.
Junior and senior high school students also participated in the Osaka/Kansai ASPnet Collaborative Learning Exchange, where they studied ESD principles and gained practical experience by organizing and managing an international forum themselves in cooperation with other ASPnet schools. At the High School International Conference in NARA, planned and run by our students, participants from Japan and abroad discussed how to reflect their learning in their own lives after meeting adults in Nara who are seriously addressing social challenges. Together, they pledged to take action toward a sustainable future.
In connection with World Cotton Day on October 7th, students of the Global Citizens Club (GCC) cultivated cotton and exhibited a booth at the National Cotton Summit. First-year junior high students in Foundations of Global Inquiry explored “The Connection Between What We Wear and the World.” With the support of the PBPCotton Foundation, students began exchanging letters with children of Indian farmers engaged in organic cotton cultivation, expressing gratitude for their learning and for the farmers’ efforts. The GCC also purchased T-shirts made from cotton grown in that village, added stitched messages, and had them delivered to the farming community.
Annual Work Plan
[Global Inquiry and World Languages]
We will further deepen “Global Inquiry” and “World Languages” in high school and “Foundation of Global Inquiry” in junior high as the core mission-based subjects of Nara Prefectural Kokusai Junior and Senior High School. Through teachers training, we will ensure all faculty members share the educational significance of these subjects and the concepts of ESD, thereby establishing a school-side system that supports students’ proactive engagement.
[International Days]
To foster awareness and actions as global citizens, we will expand the International Days initiatives, currently by the Global Citizens Club -GCC-, into a school-wide, cross-curricular program.
[Fostering a Spirit of Peace in Students]
We will create an educational environment where students living in an unpredictable era can develop the ability to cooperate with and support one another. By integrating ESD into all educational activities through “Global Inquiry,” “Foundations of Global Inquiry,” and “World Languages,” and by positioning teachers as continuous learners and role models, we will embody the UNESCO School’s Four Pillars of Learning and promote transformation throughout the school community.
