This year, our school continued its activities under the theme “Connecting with the Community, Flying Towards the Future: Miyanishi (People, Culture, and Nature).” Based on life studies, social studies, and integrated learning, the program consisted of two activities: “Learning about the History and Culture of Our Hometown” and “Interaction and Experiential Activities that Value Interpersonal Encounters and Connections.”

1. Learning about the History and Culture of Our Hometown
Our school is located in a district rich in historical sites related to the Besshi Copper Mine, the founding father of Niihama City. Every year, third-grade students take a walk around the town, visiting sites associated with the mine and listening to local stories.Through conversations with local residents about the history of Niihama City’s development and the achievements of its predecessors, students discover new wonders in the town of Miyanishi. In addition, all students performed the traditional local dance, “Kuchiya Ondo,” at school sports day, and participated in a festival gathering where they paraded a taiko float, bringing Niihama’s long-standing taiko drum festival closer to them. Through these and other activities, students interacted with local people, experienced the joys of their hometown, and developed a love for their towns of Miyanishi and Niihama.

② Interactive and Experiential Activities that Value Encounters and Connections

The off-campus orienteering gatherings held before the COVID-19 pandemic were revived, with mixed-grade groups conducting orienteering at the nature park. The sixth graders, who served as leaders, used skill time to prepare, checking the course, walking techniques, and destinations.

On the day of the event, local residents cooperated to provide safety watch over the route from the school to the nature park.Because the group activities were conducted in mixed-grade groups, older students kindly encouraged younger students and warned them if they saw any dangerous behavior, all while having fun touring the various points.Students enjoyed the autumn scenery and games played at designated spots. They also ate packed lunches and snacks in groups, deepening friendships within their groups. This created a sense of community and warm friendships throughout the school, resulting in fulfilling interactions within the school.
