2025 Annual Report

Areas covered as subjects of study

Disaster reduction/prevention, Climate change, Energy, Environment, Peace, Human rights, Gender equality, Welfare, Poverty

1st Year Theme: Environment and Energy

Under the project title “Envisioning Kamishihoro in 2030,” we conducted experiential learning in agriculture and forestry in October. Students learned about the town’s SDGs initiatives from the Kamishihoro Zero Carbon Division. By experiencing the town’s key industry, agriculture, and the forestry industry, which is deeply connected to the natural environment, students deepened their awareness of environmental and energy issues. Furthermore, students worked in groups to discuss what we can do to help Kamishihoro achieve its ideal state by 2030. Through their presentations, this program fostered the ability to forecast future scenarios and create plans.

2nd Year Theme: Welfare, Human Rights, Equality, and Justice

In December, we conducted welfare experience learning, including simulations of old age, using wheelchairs, experiencing hemiplegia (paralysis on one side), and walking with white canes. By experiencing the perspectives of both the “care receiver” and the “supporter,” students cultivated an attitude of mutual understanding, respect, and cooperation, leading to deep reflection. Through presentations on their experiences, students examined the importance of compassion in realizing the SDGs principle of “Leave No One Behind.”

3rd Year Theme: Disaster Risk Reduction, Prevention, and Climate Change

Throughout November and December, focused on disaster mitigation, prevention, and climate change, students engaged in activities such as setting up evacuation shelters, simulating shelter management through games, and giving presentations to local residents. Given the increasing need for evacuation nationwide due to climate change-induced disasters and Japan’s frequent earthquakes, students reaffirmed the necessity of preparedness in Kamishihoro and reviewed the town’s current disaster measures. This allowed them to understand what would be required of them at an actual evacuation site. Furthermore, applying the lessons from their 2nd-year welfare experience, students considered what they can do to support vulnerable people in shelters—an issue relevant not only to Kamishihoro but to Japan’s aging society as a whole.
