Our school, along with two nearby elementary and junior high schools, has been participating as a UNESCO School. In line with the city’s educational vision, ‘Nurturing rich-hearted individuals to create new possibilities for the future through a solid foundation of local education’, the three schools share the following philosophy in education: ‘Fostering individuals that love, take pride in, and can create the future together for Toyama Village, —children who love their hometown and can be nurtured into independent members of society.’ Through the activities in the three key areas emphasized by UNESCO Schools, our goal is to foster the following abilities:
◆ Recognize the strengths and challenges of Iida City and Toyama Village,
◆ Work towards solving the challenges they face, and
◆ Be able to engage and collaborate with the local community.
① Activities Related to Rich Nature
At our school, in collaboration with the local community, schools, and parents, we have organized a summer camp with the students from Betania Home (a single mother-and-child support facility in Tokyo), an organization we regularly interact with. Since, due to the abundant nature, there is also the potential for environmental hazards such as landslides, this year’s theme was “Thinking About Natural Disasters.” In addition, the third and fourth graders went on an exploration journey to investigate the “?” of the river, studying the water levels of Kamimura River and the relationship between the river and people. We also conducted joint classes with Wada Elementary School.

② Activities Related to Traditional Culture
We chose the “Shimotsuki Festival,” a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, as the theme for our school-wide group thematic research. In addition, students from grades 3 to 6 practice Yokobue, Japanese transverse flute. Learning about the local community’s passion toward the festival serves as an opportunity to think about what we can do and contribute to our region.

③ ESD Achievement Presentation at the Three Schools in Toyama-go (Three Schools Bonding Exchange Meeting)
Students from the three schools shared their reflection on their activities and roles as UNESCO schools, and helped parents and local residents learn about ESD activities. Each school gave their presentations in separate booths through a poster session.

Annual Work Plan
Activity Plan for Next Fiscal Year
– Through the connection with people who have been preserving cultural heritage in other regions, reaffirm our appreciation for the region and the “Shimotsuki Festival”.
– Learn about the Minami Alps UNESCO Eco Park and Geopark through camp activities conducted with parents and the local community.
– Learn about the local people’s thoughts and hopes on cultivating Kamimura’s specialty “Shimoguri Potatoes”, under the guidance of local residents.
– Learn about various commemorative days and connect our activities with them.
– Participate in the World Terakoya Movement’s “Used Postcard Collection Campaign.”
– Consider the strengths and challenges of the area where the three Toyama-go schools in Iida City (Toyama Junior High, Wada Elementary, Kamimura Elementary) are located, and share ideas on what can be done.
– Interact with the single mother-child support facility “Bethania Home” in Sumida Ward, Tokyo.
